From 26th-28th June, over 100 teachers from 24 European countries (and Réunion Island), met for a Professional Development Workshop on eTwinning in history and culture projects.
The conference took place in Riga, a beautiful city, that is on the UNESCO-list for a reason: wonderful old town, art nouveau buildings etc.
After arriving the first day, we were surprised by the advisor of the Latvian Ministry of Education who ended his speech by playing the national hymn on saxophone and listened to the wonderful Agnes Kleina of trilingual art(-history) bookazine Benji Knewman.
Also we created a paper bag about ourselves, knowing that we were about to fill it with wonderful new ideas for our teaching and with new connections all over Europe.
Workshops and projects
The second day was a day of two very interesting workshops. I chose Virtual reality and Comic books in history class, but heard a lot about how inspiring the other two were as well. Especially the Social Networking Workshop-idea of using Twitter and Instagram when you teach pupils or students about culture or history appealed to me and we integrated it in the projects that we would develop in the afternoon.
These projects are with French, English, Danish, Polish and German partners.
1. Children in WW II
What was it like to be a child during WWII in the different countries that take part in our project?
2. Each language is a vision to the world (Andreu Quintana)
A project around the UNESCO day of the mother tongue.
In the evening there was folk-dancing and dining with everyone and the next day it was time to get to know the other projects, find new partners and to receive and give feedback to the other partners.
I was lucky enough to stay a bit longer in order to be able to explore the Baltic coast (Jurmala) and the wonderful city of Riga, in good company and with a walking tour where I met new nice people, like a young teacher couple from Russia on their way to a European road trip, looking for a coach-surf address in the hometown of one of the eTwinning PDW workshop participants, a French Maths teacher who offered to host the couple during their stay there.
I’ve come home with many new ideas for teaching history and culture and how to link this to eTwinning projects. I’m looking forward to work with my new partners, who in only a few days have become so familiar to me. I would like to thank @eTwinning_NL for inviting me and @eTwinning_LV for organizing this PDW, which managed to enrich me as a teacher and a person!
