Luna Amelia, the girl who travelled 6 cities in 8 months

This year at LW Beekmanschool, miss Yvonne, mister Ruben and miss Mandy (and in the first semester mister Frederic and miss Katie) from Such Fun launched an eTwinning project for some children from groups 5-8. You might know it under its official title: Around the world in 8 Months, but let’s be honest; it was more like “Eight months of what is happening now, exploring, writing, composing, singing, painting, recording quizzes and learning about cities in each of the continents.”

10 countries
Thanks to the magic of eTwinning, our pupils teamed up with kids from 9 more countries across Europe to follow the adventurous life of Luna Amelia, a globe-trotting heroine who was chosen as the winning character in our explorer competition.

Sightseeing
Luna Amelia wasn’t just sightseeing and sipping hot chocolate, no, no! In each city, from New York to Tokyo, she encountered mysterious happenings: artifacts disappearing, suspicious shadows, general international oddness. Our pupils took it upon themselves to solve the mystery of the clock on the Big Ben that had stopped and turned London into a ghost city. Luna needed to collect musical sequences in every city that together would make the Big Ben clock run again, using their creativity and sharp detective instincts (and only minor debates over who stole what in Rio).

Lost chromebooks
In our classroom in the attic of the school, activities multiplied faster than lost pencils and chromebooks. Students painted, designed fictional vehicles (we’re still unsure if the flying blue shell would pass American airspace regulations), wrote summaries and newspaper articles, composed musical sequences, questioned plot twists, and – our personal favorite – tried to explain to Luna Amelia why catching a melody from a trombone and a saxophone in a Rio de Janeiro carnival parade with your flute is totally fine.

Travel agency meets art museum
By the end, our school walls looked like a travel agency collided with an art museum. But parents, fear not: all the glitter and posters (handmade, naturally) served a higher purpose. Our pupils not only flexed their creativity and teamwork, they also explored world cultures, practiced storytelling, and learned that international collaboration sometimes includes explaining Dutch traditions to confused Spanish kids. Luckily they painted and recorded a summary of the story, so you will understand what this was all about: https://youtu.be/cDhUZNc6NuA Global citizen
So next time your child will tell you how Luna saved London by finding musical notes, just nod proudly. You’re raising a global citizen. With glitter on their face.

You can have a look at the different Sandboxes created by the pupils from all countries here:
